Happy New Year!
Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011Happy New Year to all of our Chinese friends and anyone else celebrating the Lunar New Year! This is one of the most important holidays in China and is a fabulous excuse for a big party lasting 15 days.
In Vancouver, celebrations will take place in Chinatown and throughout Richmond. You do not have to be Chinese to join in the celebrations … AND this is a great place to take the family since there are many activities especially for children.
Tonight … is New Years Eve. the restaurants will be filled with families enjoying a Chinese feast. At midnight be sure to open your windows … you may hear the banging of pots and pans and some very loud fire crackers.
The purpose of the pot banging and firecrackers is to create as much loud noise as you can. The purpose is to scare the bad spirits away — to prevent them from bringing bad luck.
Don’t miss out on all the events and shows … starting with the Chinese New Year’s Parade on February 6 from 12PM to 2PM. – 2pm.
The Chinatown Spring Festival is the center point of the celebrations. It takes place at the Chinese Cultural Centre Courtyard starting at 2PM . This free event includes performances, martial arts demonstrations, and loads of activities for the kids.

Many of the Richmond BC malls have displays, events and demonstrations. Be sure to check them out.
